Infrastructure as a Service |
This provides virtual servers and networks along with storage and systems software and designed to be an adjunct to or replace and entire data centre.
For example you may have a web based applications that need extra load during peak business hours. In this instance you would be able to provision additional servers for the peak hours and close them down for off peak. You have full control over which operating systems you install and are responsible for the systems management. Calculating costs for usage can be complicated, typical you will pay per hour for computing resource and this cost will be based on the specification of your server, the more RAM and server cores the higher the cost. In additional you may also pay for data transferred out of the service and short and long term storage. Two good examples of this are:
- Amazon's Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2)
- Gogrid
